I’ve been marketing online since 1999, and one thing I’ve learned is that it is much easier to sell something when someone contacts you, instead of you contacting them.

How do you get more people to want to contact you? The number one thing that influences how many people reach out to you is how you position yourself as a “leader” or “expert”.

Simply focus on learning the skills and mindset to being a leader, and you can start to attract more leads for your business.

Studies show that how you present yourself (both online and offline) dramatically effects the results you see from your marketing.

In this blog post, I’m going to give you some tips that can really help you to come across as a leader, more effectively, efficiently, and powerfully.

Learning by observing top leaders in the industry

Noticing how leaders carry themselves, and the words they use in their communication, will help you to improve your communication and presentation skills as a leader.

Opt-in to some of the newsletters of top leaders, and also follow them on social networks.

Notice how top leaders present themselves, the posture they have in their emails, and notice the types of status updates they make, and the type of updates they don’t make too!

How to become the most successful version of yourself

A great exercise is to begin by brainstorming the character traits of leaders that you look up to. Wouldn’t it be great if you can exhibit some of those character traits yourself?

  • Productive
  • Self-confident
  • Driven
  • Busy
  • Generous
  • Helpful

When you interact with your prospects, putting yourself into the shoes of the character of a top leader will help your communications become more effective!

Before you know it, you and your new character will become one. So think about which positive traits you would like to develop in yourself!

Following up is the key to success

Email is a great way to start building a relationship on auto-pilot, and keep your name at the top of prospects minds, but the epiphany in my business was when I started picking up the phone and speaking to people.

Many top leaders find that getting on the phone is a lot more productive than spending time replying to emails.

“Call me” is probably the most effective response you can make to any person who contacts you with questions, and any leads you generate through your online marketing.

Replying “call me” will help to sort and sift the people who are serious from those who aren’t, and can save you so much time – especially when you start generating a lot of leads and enquiries.

People want to be led

It seems to be in human DNA that we want a leader.

By positioning yourself as a leader, you will be amazed how it can improve your results in business.

Positioning yourself as a leader will differentiate you from all the other network marketers and direct sellers out there.

Create your own product

You don’t need success before creating your own product. One of the best ways to start generating more leads is to offer valuable free training to your prospects in return for them sharing their name and email address.

A free give-away on your blog is a great way to provide value, and generate leads which you can then follow up on. One of the biggest mistakes is not making your own “lead magnet” sooner. If I started over again, I would create my own products immediately!

You can have someone put together your lead magnet very inexpensively, and it will have your name on it, to brand you as an expert who provides value. I will go into how to do this in a future blog post.

Strategies that work

Two great types of content marketing for establishing yourself as a leader, and attracting prospects to you are YouTube videos, and blogging.

Both of these strategies help you with long term lead generation as YouTube videos and blog posts will appear for a long time when you get them to rank highly using popular keywords.

If you want to generate lead flow quickly, you can use paid strategies if you have the budget for it. Facebook ads, and YouTube video ads can be effective.

To kick-start your business, I would recommend using a paid strategy if you have the budget for it and are willing to learn about optimising your ads, and tracking conversions. Also use one of the free strategies such as blogging, because this can help to build a lot of trust and credibility online.

An auto-responder is also highly recommended. If you know how to install and setup a WordPress plugin I would recommend one called IMSC otherwise services such as Aweber, Constant Contact, and Mail Chimp are all worthwhile.

Keyword optimise your content

Keyword optimisation is essential so that people see your videos and blog posts.  See my other blog post for tips on search engine optimisation.

Keep in mind that if you just put out videos and blog posts and share them on Facebook, you won’t be leveraging the searches that are made on YouTube and Google.

Always track your traffic and know your numbers

When you start getting leads, it is useful if you know where they are coming from. By adding tracking code you can find out if your leads came from Facebook, YouTube videos, or paid advertising channels. I will go into exactly how to track your traffic in a future blog post.

Successful marketing is all about doing more of doing what is working, and ditch everything that isn’t working. Tracking your traffic gives you concrete information about where your leads are coming from.

If your videos are working, look at which videos are working most effectively. This will help you to know the right track for creating more content for the future!

Don’t just guess and hope that something will stick.

All of your marketing needs to have a goal – for example filling out a name and email address to download a free report. That way you can ensure that all your marketing is measurable. You can spend more time on what is working, and stop wasting any time on things that don’t. Make sure everything is written down.
